Alpha and Omega - alpha | omega

Saying, I am Alpha and Omega, the first and the last: - Revelation 1:11 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last. - Revelation 22:13

The Alpha Male: Dogs and wolves show deference to the alpha male in their pack by allowing them to be the first to eat. The alpha can be male or female. Wolves use eye contact as an indicator of dominance or submission, but in order to establish a dominant position they often also show physical superiority through playing or fighting. This is true for most social animals, including chimpanzees and man. Social dominance and the "pecking order" begins early in life

Directly related to the preeminence of Christ is the description that He is the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the ending, the first and the last. It is no accident that Jesus appears in the last book of the bible, Revelation, as the Alpha and Omega. Genesis starts with "In the beginning God" and Revelation ends with "the Omega, the last, the ending."

"Alpha: is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. "Omega" is the last letter. We even derive our word for letters from the Greek "alpha" when we say "alphabet." The English equivalent of this name God saying I am "A" and "Z." The clarifier is always the accompanying statement that I am the first and the last, the beginning and the ending.

Hebrews 1 describes Jesus as the Creator, as from the beginning, imperishable, and as never-ending. The earth however, and all things and people in it grow old, and like a garment wear out. God, however, does not wear out. He does not grow old. He really has no beginning or ending in himself. He always was and always will be. Yet for us he is our Alpha and Omega. That is, He is our beginning and ending. He is the starter and finisher of all things. Nothing starts without Him and nothing ends without Him. He is the Boss from start to finish.

Paul declares, "He is before all things and by him all things hold together. He is the head, the first born, so that in everything his has the supremacy. (Colossians 1:15-18) God wants us to know that his is the first cause and the last cause. Therefore we can know and be assured that if anything good is going to happen in us, to us, by us, it will be because the Alpha and Omega, the starter and ender of all things determines it to be so. All good comes from him. He is the Author and Finisher, the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and Ending, the First and the Last. This world is not about you. It is about the Lord. He wants to have preeminence in everything. (Colossians 1:18) He who began creation with His First Word will have the Last Word. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and Ending, the First and the Last.

How about in your life and mine? Is he first, last, or somewhere in between?

Thus says the LORD the King of Israel, and his redeemer the LORD of hosts; I am the first, and I am the last; and beside me there is no God. Isaiah 44:6

Who has wrought and done it, calling the generations from the beginning? I the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he. - Isaiah 41:4

Questions for Discussion:
  • Do you have any memorial altars where you did business with God?
  • Have you, or anyone you've kmown, obeyed Matthew 5:23 "leave your gift at the altar" and be restored first"?
  • Is there anything in your life that needs to be placed on the altar?
